Decorations For Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving will be here soon and my thoughts are on the huge turkey in my freezer and how much fun we are going to have with our guests.
I've started on my centerpiece for the dining room table. I bought these 3 brass candle holders at a thrift store for $4.00.  I cleaned them with Brasso and I think they look pretty good.  Before Thanksgiving, I'm sure I will add something else to the centerpiece.
We had friends over the other night and I just had to light my candles even though they are for Thanksgiving Day.  Back to Dollar Tree to find more drip less candles.
We will be playing a Holiday Trivia game I found online.   It is like the game show "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" and  "Family Feud".  The game lets you call family members or friends when you get stumped on an answer.  How neat will it be to call people who couldn't make it to the dinner?
It will be a great  way to get us into the holiday spirit and include others in our celebration.
Click Here for free printables, answer sheet, and instructions.
I love this idea found at Balancing Home.
I will be making this for our guests.  It would be fun to see if we can guess who wrote what they are most grateful for.
Or maybe the kids would like to make these cute pine cone turkeys.
Holiday Family Relay

Make feathers from construction paper and have them to write what they are thankful for on each feather.
Here is an idea for that Halloween pumpkin before it finally expires.
Use it for cold drinks for the kids.  They will love getting juice boxes and other drinks from this carved out pumpkin.
It can also be used for extra ice for your guests.
I love these turkeys from Our Best Bites.  They would be so cute sitting on the table and other places around the kitchen and dining room.  They are simple to make with Oreo cookies, mini Reese cups, Malt balls, candy corn, and frosting.  Go to the above link for instructions.

Inspiration for Fall Porches

Fall is my absolute favorite time of the year.   The colors are beautiful and I wish they would last all year long.  I have been gathering ideas for my porch.  Here are ideas that got me to thinking about dressing  my porch for fall.
Home and Garden
This wheel barrow with the welcome friends pumpkins is an awesome idea. I love pumpkins so much that my husband grew a field of them one year.
Our children were  young and I think this started their love of pumpkins too.  Their dad wrote
their names on a pumpkin.  It was so cool watching their names change as the pumpkins grew.
I also remember my sister and I  gathering our pumpkins in a wheel barrow. That was one of my favorite fall memories ever.
House of Hawthornes
I love this fall arrangement  with the basket and  mums. And the cabbage in the tin bucket is just too clever.  This definitely says fall season is here. And how cute is the vintage truck with pumkins in the back.  It's the little things that make a difference.

Found on Pinterest
How do people come up with all of these awesome ideas?  I don't even like roosters and I love this.  Oh my goodness, I will be looking for roosters the next shopping trip to Hobby Lobby.
Love, love, love this entrance with the candles and pumpkins.  Two of my favorite things.  You can check out this very talented lady at Rattlebridge.

How to Cheat at Making Pumpkin Tarts

Photo: Party Pinching

I love this idea for those busy times you want something homemade but simply don't have the time.  The shells are store bought and so is the filling.  Buy a pumpkin or sweet potato pie and scoop out the filling and put into the tart shells.  Add a fancy topping and you look homemade.

Spider Halloween Chocolate Chip Cookies

My daughter loves chocolate chip cookies, it's her favorite guilty pleasure.  I can't wait to present these to her on Halloween.  Can't you image the reaction to your guests when you serve up these gross cookies. Fill Party Balloons with Candy and Gifts The Easy Way

Photo: Gunny Sack
Fill Balloons With Candy and Toys using the following technique.  I have always liked the idea of filling balloons with candy and letting the kids pop them but I didn't like the idea of filling each balloon.  We know how the friction can slow things down.  If you make  a water bottle funnel (use a bottle with a wide mouth) you can easily push candy into balloons.
Use orange and black for Halloween parties, Red or Green for Christmas Parties, pink for a girls birthday party, blue for a boys birthday Parties , and pastels for Easter parties. How about filling with small baby shower gifts and letting mom to be pop the balloon.
For Gender Reveal baby showers, fill with pink or blue confetti and let someone special pop the balloon. There are so many ways this idea can be used. Use larger balloons for larger items.  And don't forget money slides in easily too.  Teens love money.

(Craft Fail) Halloween Gloves Filled With Candy

Craft Fail!!! Not happy at all with the way these Halloween candy gloves turned out and can't believe I'm posting this. The gloves where  HUGE. 3 times too big for my hands. So much for one size fits all.  Well back to the  One roll of sweet tarts should fill the finger of the glove, and  you can add a spider ring.  Fill the rest of the glove with your favorite candies, tie with a colorful  ribbon (I only had black) and hopefully it will look much better than this.  Learn through my mistake and buy small or medium gloves and the clear gloves would show the candy much better.  I guess the Kids at Fall Fest won't mind how they look, if I can get up the nerve to pass them out.  I do have a reputation to protect here.

UPDATE : These gloves were a hit at a Halloween Party, and it was the adults loving them.  You just never know!!

Cute and Easy Halloween Luminaries for Kids

Photo: A Grande Life

Loved this idea for small kids.  As I read the post, I remembered all the times my kids and I made crafts for the different seasons. I'm so glad I invested this time with my kidsIt is such a small thing but leaves a lasting impression.  My 27 year old still talks about the things we made.  Money was tight back in those days but how much does it take to use left over jars and a little imagination. I was so touched when the writer said her son couldn't wait to put out his luminaries for Halloween. It just brought a flood of memories about time well spent.  You can get her picture tutorial on A Grande Life.

Fall Decorations and Invitations

Personalized Pumpkin
Mums and Scarecrow
I came into the kitchen late one night and my daughter was tying a ribbon on a pumpkin.  I thought, oh my dear...The thought of a pumpkin and a ribbon just didn't click for me.  The next day I had a change of heart.  She cut out letters on card stock and used colored pens for the dots and background.  I must say, I was pleased with the finished product.  We have this cute little pumpkin on our front porch..that and this adorable  scarecrow she put in a pot of mums.  I loved both ideas.
These fall decorations would be  perfect for the fall cookout or party using these invitations.

Layered Pumpkin Cheesecake

Love, love, love this recipe from Farm Chicks.  I'm making this to take to a Fall Festival this weekend.  See those layers, it's graham crackers.  What I'm going to do is to take a boxed cheesecake and add pumpkin pie filling to it and layer it with the graham crackers.  I can only see it working.... I'm always adding something to the plain cheesecake kits.  I'm so excited about this cake.
My husband is always telling me not to take something to a get together that I have never made before...I say  take risks, change things up, try something new.  Will update you after the festival...We will see who is right, him or me.
Click on Farm Chicks for her recipe.

UPDATE I won runner up with my pumpkin cheesecake (Jello Cheesecake) that I added the pumpkin pie filling to.  The judge had a hard time deciding between mine and a pumpkin pound cake (that was delicious).  The pound cake was from scratch so she deserved to win....but mine was really good.  The next time I will use 2 boxes and add just a touch more pumpkin.

Fun Decorating Ideas for Halloween

Add a more fun to your home  this Halloween with some of these great decorating ideas:

  • Change your light bulbs to a creepy color like blue or green It can instantly change the tone of a room from normal to spooky.  Replace the regular bulbs in lamps with colored  Party Light bulbs .  It looks best to only have one color in a  room. These bulbs are available in several colors and can be purchased at your local hardware store.

  • Strings of orange and/or purple colored mini-lights are a great way to add festive lighting. You can hang mini-lights around your window frames, curtain rods, door frames, across the ceiling, on a balcony, etc.
  • Create creepy autumn centerpieces by filling vases with dried flowers, brown leaves, and empty branches. Tie a black ribbon bow around each centerpiece.
  • Carve a hole in the bottom of a pumpkin, scoop out the pulp, add a battery operated votive candle in the bottom.  This looks really good on a carved or stenciled pumpkin.
  • For a lite brite effect  , Open bottom of the pumpkin and clean out insides. Find a stencil you like and mask tape it on the pumpkin.  With an awl punch the outline of the design through the pumpkin's flesh. fit each hole with a bulb from a set of battery-powered string lights

  •   Use mini pumpkins, remove the stem and replace with bling such as a sparkly button...really cute.

Transform Pumps into Witch Shoes

These are the must have shoes for Halloween.  I love this Idea from Craft Test Dummies.  What witch would be complete without these adorable attention grabbers.
These were suede pumps that she painted  with a fabric paint using a   color with glitter.  She added glow in the dark paint , tulle and maribou feathers.  I really like the spider  added on top.  For step by step instructions, visit her site.  Add this funny button that says If the broom fits, fly it, and you will be the belle of the ball, or at least the best dressed witch.

2011 Fall Fashion Trends

  •  Military inspired fashion trends are the hot ticket for Winter 2011. Cargo pants, tapered khaki’s and military jackets are perfect when  paired with a   stylish camisole, lots of jewelry and a pair of  brown leather boots. If you are not into the military style add Khaki, olive and green colors to your wardrobe.
  • Nail Art in eye catching designs is all the rage this season.  Check out local salons for the latest trends.  If you can't afford a salon purchase a nail kit
  • Animal Print is hot again this season.  Less is always better though.  Add animal print pieces like handbags or other  simple pieces. Want to make a fashion statement,  pair together an animal print skirt, a white blouse and red pumps.
