3 Steps to Tame a Out of Control Closet

Decluttering is a word that is dear to my heart.  Several months ago I read a book on organizing  that changed my life…no kidding. Nothing gives me the satisfaction of seeing a well organized closet.  I have done it for years with the same results.  A few months later, it is time to do it again.  But this time was different.
Here are the steps I used to gain control of my massive clothes collection.

STEP ONE
(This is a crucial step that you can not skip)

Take all of your clothes out of the closet and  put them on the bed.  Every piece must come out.   Leave no clothes hanging or anything on the floor.

 STEP TWO
Try on every piece of clothes (my daughter didn't want to do this step but was glad she did).
Evaluate every top, skirt, pant, coat, dress, etc.
Is there anything wrong with the piece you tried on.  Is there a button missing, a pucker that drives you crazy, too short, just plain ugly? If you don't love it, donate it or sell it on ebay.

If you have clothes you love but they need altering, gather them all and take to your seamstress, but make sure they are worth the money to have altered.

Everything you put back in your closet will be clothes you love, and that fit you like a glove.  You will be surprised at the combinations you can come up with once you streamline your closet.

Remember when you had nothing to wear but had a closet full of clothes?  Now you have less but better choices.  Everything you grab should be something that works for you.

 STEP THREE
Now is the time to shop for basics and to replace important pieces that you could no longer use.
Make a list of needs and stick to it.  You will not believe how different you will shop once you do this exercise.  You will be much more selective about every piece of clothing you buy.

I can't believe how much this changed my shopping habits.  I don't waste money on clothes that just hang in my closet.  If I buy it, it's going to be something I absolutely love.

I love to shop Goodwill and when I go now I don't come out with huge bags of clothes just because they are cheap.  I come out with clothes that have been well thought out.  I use my color note app on my smartphone to list clothes I'm looking for at Goodwill.  It keeps me from impulse buying.

Please leave a comment to let me know how this system worked for you.

How to Stock and Organize Your Pantry

Today I took inventory of all the food in  my pantries and cabinets. I never dreamed I had so many cans, bottles, jars, packets, boxes, canisters, bags, and spice bottles. I'm getting tired just listing them.

In my defense I'm shooting for a well stocked pantry but I think I missed my mark a little.  When there is so much stuff, there is no way to know what you have.  That's why an inventory list is important.
Here is my free printable  you can use to list all of your food items. It seems like a lot of trouble to do this but trust me,  it is an eye opener.
I found I have 10 cans of early peas which were bought on sale.  That is a good thing, but I only have 2 cans of corn so the next time it goes on sale I will know to go easy on the peas and stock up the corn.
Now I can plan my meals around what I have the most of.  I saw items in my pantry that have been there awhile and that I need to use before they go out of date.  I don't list the expiration date because I purge anything that has expired and only good food items remain.

Since my list is in microsoft word, it will be easy to make changes and print out the list when I use or buy pantry items. No more guess work about having an item in your cabinets, once they are organized, they are a breeze to find.

This list can go on the refrigerator or inside a cabinet so you will know at a glance what you have for meal planning and grocery shopping.
